Maths at Millbrook Primary School
At our school, we believe that every child is a mathematician in the making. Our approach to maths is built on the principles of mastery, ensuring that all pupils develop a deep, lasting understanding of mathematical concepts.
Curriculum Overview
We follow the 2014 National Curriculum for Mathematics, covering:
Number and Place Value
Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication & Division
Fractions, Decimals & Percentages
Measurement
Geometry (Shape, Position & Direction)
Statistics
Algebra (in upper KS2)
Our teaching develops fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving across all strands of mathematics.
Mastery Approach
We use the Mastery Number programme to build strong foundations in number sense and fluency. This includes:
Daily number-focused sessions
A concrete–pictorial–abstract (CPA) approach
Carefully sequenced small steps for deep understanding
Opportunities for children to reason, explain, and explore
We believe that all children can achieve in maths when given the right tools and time to master each concept.
Power Maths Scheme
Our main teaching resource is the Power Maths scheme, which:
Aligns with the mastery approach
Provides engaging, structured lessons
Encourages mathematical thinking and discussion
Supports all learners through scaffolded challenges and extension tasks
Each lesson includes whole-class teaching, guided practice, and independent work tailored to pupil needs.
Focus on Arithmetic & Mental Maths
We place a strong emphasis on arithmetic fluency and mental maths strategies to help children become confident, efficient problem-solvers. This includes:
Daily arithmetic practice
Fluent in five warm ups
Regular low-stakes quizzes to reinforce recall
Focus on number facts, times tables, and estimation
Encouraging flexible thinking and efficient strategies
These skills are essential for success in all areas of maths and beyond.
Supporting Maths at Home
We encourage families to support maths learning at home through fun, interactive resources:
White Rose Maths – Parent Resources
BBC Bitesize – KS1 & KS2 Maths
Topmarks – Maths Games
Nrich – Maths Challenges
