At Millbrook Primary School the key themes of PSHE and Citizenship are thoroughly interwoven into our whole approach to teaching and learning.
Fundamental British values are an integral part of our PSHE and Citizenship curriculum.

PSHE and Citizenship help to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active and responsible citizens. Pupils are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum (see PSHE, SMSC and curriculum policies) and to contribute to the life of their school and community. In doing so they recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues. |
Democracy- Our school and eco councils help pupils to understand democracy. We have a highly successful democracy where the pupils are fully involved in democratic processes e.g. pupils campaign to represent their classes and vote for their representatives. The school and eco councils (which are led and supported by members of staff) adhere to democratic processes, reporting their actions to the governing body on our governor open mornings.
Pupils find out about the main political and social institutions that affect their lives and about their responsibilities, rights and duties as individuals and members of communities. This year, as part of the build up to the general election, pupils will take part in a democracy day where they will have an election for school values ambassadors.
Rule of Law- We have a clearly structured behaviour policy which we regularly review. Pupils are involved in the annual review of the school codes of behaviour (class rules). At the start of each year, each class develops a teaching and learning contract which is agreed with pupils, staff and parents. This helps pupils to make decisions that are acceptable to the school community and society at large.
Pupils are taught to respond to community concerns or local disturbances in a positive way which supports British democratic society. They are encouraged to see police officers as positive role models and our community partners. This is supported by taking part in Crucial Crew workshops (involving the emergency services) and visits to school from the Police and Police Community Support Officers for school events such as safety week.
Respect- Pupils learn to understand and respect, diversity, our common humanity and differences so that they can go on to form effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning. Pupils at Millbrook learn this through our school values (embedded throughout the whole curriculum and school ethos), roles such as school councillors, eco warriors, values ambassadors, reading champions, play leaders, sports ambassadors and through PE coaching sessions (which promote ‘good sportsmanship’ and attitudes of equality and fairness). Activities such as our Year 5 and Year 1 reading buddies scheme help promote mutual respect between pupils across different phases of school.
Our R.E curriculum provides a broad and balanced education on a range of faiths, religions and cultures. Our investigative approach to teaching R.E. helps children to learn about and have respect and tolerance for different faiths and beliefs. This is supported by visits to different places of worship and having visitors from different faiths come in to lead workshops and assemblies (providing opportunities to discuss their culture and beliefs and share their traditions).
Individual Liberty- Pupils have key roles and responsibilities in school, such as; classroom monitors, play leaders, school councillors, Eco warriors, reading champions and librarians. Each role comes with its own set of responsibilities. Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for pupils to make choices safely. Through opportunities such as our extra-curricular and lunchtime clubs, forest school and outdoor learning sessions, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.
All this is supported by our schools commitment to Philosophy for Children (P4C) where the children are encouraged to think critically and discuss their ideas.
